The Heart of HLCR

The people who show up for HLCR boots on the ground have always been at the center of our rescue. This is the story of one long-standing volunteer and a decade of dedication to the dogs who need it most.

Grounds Maintenance Help Needed

Marty can't find his favorite pink bunny toy in the grass anymore. If the grass gets any higher we're going to lose him too. Can you help?

HLCR is looking for a few good volunteers who are not afraid of a little Texas sun, a weed eater, and giving something back. You'll get fresh air, exercise, and the sincere gratitude of a bunch of dogs who can't work a lawnmower but appreciate the effort tremendously.

Highland Lakes Canine Rescue has 15 acres, dog play yards, and walking trails that need regular attention and so we really need some people to help out every couple of weeks. We work after 5pm, so the dogs are inside resting while you build character and, let's be honest, a solid tan. Our schedule is flexible though. Volunteering with us also comes with all the free slobbery kiss you could ever need.

As if Pearl could be any more perfect...

Pearls have been considered symbols of wisdom gained through experience across many cultures, from ancient China to Rome. They were also traditionally associated with loyalty, integrity, and calm strength. Unlike other precious stones that are mined and cut, a pearl arrives in the world whole and already luminous. No shaping required.

Recently, volunteers took our Pearl to visit residents at Arbor House, and the photos speak for themselves. There is something quietly extraordinary about this dog and the way she moves through the world, offering comfort and companionship with ease.

Pearl has been with HLCR since July 24th, 2025. That is over 8 months of waiting patiently for her family to find her. In that time, she has proven herself to be gentle with children, kind to other dogs, calm on a leash, easy in the car, and genuinely wonderful company. She does not ask for much. She just gives…

Luna's 10th Birthday Celebration!

Last week, our girl Luna turned 10, and thanks to some truly wonderful volunteers, she got the birthday outing she deserved. The crew took her to Tomlinson's Feed in Lakeway for an afternoon of shakes, sniffs, and well-earned adoration from everyone she met along the way.

Luna came to us as a cancer survivor with more energy and heart than dogs half her age, and watching her spend her birthday surrounded by people who love her was a reminder of why this work matters so much. We are endlessly grateful to the volunteers who show up for our dogs, not just on the big days, but every single day.

Luna is still available for adoption. If you've been thinking about it, her birthday feels like a pretty good sign. Learn more at hlcr.org/adoptable-dogs/lunaΒ

MFHS Rick Edwards Day of Service

This past Friday, our shelter was filled with extra love and light. πŸ’™

In honor of Rick Edwards Day of Service, we had the absolute joy of welcoming students and their incredible teacher from Marble Falls High School's Special Education program. These remarkable young people rolled up their sleeves and got straight to work scrubbing and cleaning dog toys, decorating kennel cards to help our pups shine their brightest for potential adopters, and stuffing Kongs to keep our furry residents happy and enriched.

Watching them pour their hearts into every single task was a reminder of what community truly looks like. Their kindness, enthusiasm, and genuine compassion for our animals made this day one to remember.

To the students and their wonderful teachers: thank you. Thank you for choosing to spend your time with us, for the care you brought to every dog toy and every kennel card, and for…

🫑 Now Recruiting Keyboard Warriors

Our adorable pups are experts at fetching, sitting, and melting hearts, but they're terrible at posting themselves on adoption websites. (Trust us, we've tried.) We need volunteers to help showcase these deserving dogs online and connect them with their forever families. It's important work that truly saves lives, and you can do it in your pajamas with a cup of coffee. If you've got a few hours a week and a soft spot for wagging tails, we'd love your help. No experience needed, just a internet enabled device and a heart that says "yes" to puppy eyes.

Interested? Comment below or message us. Let's get these babies home! ❀️

Ruby Has Found Her Forever Home!

Ruby is a cattle dog. She's smart, particular, and took her time trusting people. She became our longest resident not because something was wrong with her, but because she needed the right person. That person turned out to be someone who already knew her, who'd spent many hours learning how she thinks and what makes her feel safe.

Three years is a long time. Long enough to wonder if this dog would ever leave. Long enough to doubt whether we were doing enough, whether anyone would ever see what we saw in her. There were days when her kennel card felt like a reminder of failure.

But what matters is that we kept showing up. We kept introducing her to people. We kept believing she was worth the space she took up and the time she needed. Her foster took her home on a trial basis. Then a week turned…
