In Defense of the Large Dog

Big dogs get a bad rap, and honestly, it makes no sense. Walk through any animal shelter and you’ll notice a pattern: the small dogs go fast. The medium dogs go fairly fast. And the big dogs? The big dogs sit there, tails wagging hopefully, watching family after family walk past them toward the nearest available Chihuahua. It’s a little heartbreaking, and it is also, we would argue, a massive mistake.

So today, I’m here to make the case for them.

MFHS Rick Edwards Day of Service

This past Friday, our shelter was filled with extra love and light. 💙

In honor of Rick Edwards Day of Service, we had the absolute joy of welcoming students and their incredible teacher from Marble Falls High School's Special Education program. These remarkable young people rolled up their sleeves and got straight to work scrubbing and cleaning dog toys, decorating kennel cards to help our pups shine their brightest for potential adopters, and stuffing Kongs to keep our furry residents happy and enriched.

Watching them pour their hearts into every single task was a reminder of what community truly looks like. Their kindness, enthusiasm, and genuine compassion for our animals made this day one to remember.

To the students and their wonderful teachers: thank you. Thank you for choosing to spend your time with us, for the care you brought to every dog toy and every kennel card, and for…

BLOG POST: How to Show Your Rescue Dog Love (Their Way)

Valentine's Day reminds us to celebrate love in all its forms, and at Highland Lakes Canine Rescue, we know that the bond between humans and their rescue dogs is one of the most beautiful examples. But here's the thing: your dog has their own unique love language, and it's far more meaningful than anything Hallmark could dream up.

Freya's Forecast

Listen up, humans. It's Freya, your friendly neighborhood Anatolian Shepherd, and I've been monitoring the forecast. Wintry weather incoming this weekend, and frankly, I'm concerned about your preparedness levels.

As someone who was literally bred to protect flocks in the mountains of Turkey, I feel obligated to point out that your Chihuahua in the backyard is NOT equipped for this. Neither is your outdoor cat who "likes it out there." They're just trying to make you feel better. Bring them inside.

Here's my official Cold Weather Checklist:

⤷ Bring your pets indoors (yes, even the one who's "fine")

⤷ Check that outdoor water bowls aren't frozen solid (ice is not hydration)
