Donation for Hurricane Relief

A husky mix shelter dog at Highland Lakes Canine Rescue.

In response to Hurricane Helene's devastating impact on North Carolina communities, our organization has donated $1,000.00 to Blue Ridge Humane Society's disaster relief fund. We recently learned the story of Winston the dog and his family, who were airlifted from their flooded home in Bat Cave, NC. Blue Ridge Humane Society provided crucial supplies and support for Winston's family – exactly the kind of emergency assistance our donation aimed to enable. While many communities face a long road to recovery, we're proud to support Blue Ridge Humane Society's vital disaster relief fund and life-saving work. Diamond Feature: Anakin

Shelter dog out on a walk at a dog rescue.

When Anakin arrived, he was trembling and so covered in scabs we could not identify his mix. His story began in a stray pack, where life was harsh. Thanks to the intervention of Maddie's Dog Rescue and Bandera Animal Control, Anakin is at the right place! Like our alum Farley, Anakin is fighting demodex mange, a non-contagious but painful condition that needs time and dedicated care. Now a part of our Diamonds in the Ruff program, Anakin will receive our proven mange treatment and all the love he needs to heal from our dedicated staff and volunteers. Once he completes treatment, Anakin will be set up for a healthy, happy future as we search for his forever family.

Diamond Feature: Diamond Girls

A homeowner returned to find these flea-infested puppies abandoned on their property, with no idea how to care for them. Reaching out for help after discovering them, there were originally four sister puppies. However, one had unfortunately passed away shortly after arriving. She has been buried on HLCR property. Her surviving sisters Blanche, Rose and Dorothy are about two months old. They have tested positive for coccidia, an intestinal disease likely passed from their mother. They will be staying in our Carole Ann Keiffer Care Facility for treatment and monitoring. Once they receive a clean bill of health, we have no doubt they will find homes quickly!

Volunteer Update

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for our Volunteer Appreciation Event! This year’s celebration was made extra special, thanks to a generous sponsor, allowing us to recognize the incredible commitment of our volunteers. We were thrilled to honor nine volunteers with over five years and 50+ events under their belts with special HLCR jackets, while ten others with 50+ events in less than five years received HLCR Yeti cups. All attending volunteers received HLCR water bottles as a token of our gratitude. The evening was filled with dog-themed games, a delicious dinner, and, most importantly, the joy of celebrating each of you.

For those who couldn’t make it, know you were missed! We hope you can join us next year as we continue to recognize the amazing dedication and passion that make HLCR what it is. Thank you for all you do—you truly are the heart of our mission!
