Lakeway Elementary: Top Dogs in Community Service

When we received an email from Lakeway Elementary about partnering on a donation drive this October, we were grateful for consideration and hoped for a good response. What we got was absolutely incredible. Boxes and bags overflowing with supplies that will make such a difference for our rescue dogs.

The students, teachers, and parents really showed up for us. We received several bags of dog food that will keep tails wagging and bellies full, along with collars in every size, an amazing assortment of toys (because every pup deserves playtime!), and plenty of treats for training and just-because rewards. But one of the most touching contributions was something we didn't expect at all: beautifully painted rocks to line our walking trails.

Imagine our volunteers walking dogs past colorful, hand-painted stones created by elementary students. Each rock is a little reminder that these kids care about the animals in our community. It's those thoughtful touches that make this partnership so special.
There's something incredibly heartwarming about seeing young people rally around a cause that helps animals in need. When kids participate in drives like this, they're not just donating items. They're learning empathy, compassion, and the power of community action. They're discovering that even small acts of kindness can make a real difference in the lives of animals who are waiting for their forever homes.
Getting the next generation invested in animal welfare is crucial for the future of rescue work. These students are developing a lifelong understanding that animals deserve care, respect, and love. They're seeing firsthand how their actions directly help dogs who need a second chance. And who knows? Maybe some of these young donors will grow up to be veterinarians, shelter volunteers, or adoptive pet parents themselves.

The practical impact of this donation drive can't be overstated. Every bag of food means we can focus more resources on medical care and adoptions. Every toy provides enrichment that keeps our dogs happy and helps them show their personalities to potential adopters. Every collar helps a dog look their best when meeting families. These aren't just supplies. They're tools that help us give each dog the best possible chance at finding their forever home.
What really struck us throughout this experience was the enthusiasm. Students asked their parents about what dogs need. Teachers integrated the drive into classroom discussions about kindness and community service. Parents took their kids shopping specifically to pick out items for the shelter dogs. It became a whole-school effort that brought everyone together around a common goal of helping animals.
These students didn't have to give up their time or convince their parents to buy supplies for shelter dogs. But they did. And that tells us something beautiful about this generation and the community we're all part of together.

At Highland Lakes Canine Rescue, we work hard every day to give dogs the care and love they deserve while they wait for their perfect families. But we can't do it alone. Community support like what we saw from Lakeway Elementary is what makes our mission possible. It's what allows us to say yes to dogs who need help, to provide medical care, to create comfortable spaces, and to keep searching for the right home for every single pup.
We're already looking forward to working with the students, teachers, and parents of Lakeway Elementary again in the future. Maybe we'll visit classrooms to talk about responsible pet ownership. Maybe we'll organize another drive. Maybe some students will even come volunteer when they're old enough. Whatever comes next, we know this is the beginning of a wonderful partnership.

To everyone at Lakeway Elementary who participated in October's donation drive, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. And from all the dogs who will benefit from your generosity, an extra wag and a happy bark. You knocked it out of the park, and we couldn't be more grateful!
